The Originality of Barbecue Sauce

0

So tonight as I was snacking on a late night pair of microwaved hot dogs on toasted bread with barbecue sauce, I realized how incredible a thing is barbecue sauce. Of all the many varieties I have tasted, I can’t think of any two with similar flavors.

My choice tonight for my gourmet snack was Original KC Masterpiece. I prefer this sauce to most, unless I’m working with chicken. For barbecued chicken, I’ve got to use Kraft Original Barbecue Sauce.

As a devout fan of barbecue sauces, I have tried many, yet found that no two are alike. At the moment, I can’t think of any other food product that shares such a strong uniqueness amongst its peers. Crazy stuff.

More Age Means More Hair

0

I’m 27 years old now. I’m getting longer hairs in neat places. For the past couple years, I’ve noticed my nose hairs growing rampant, which is kind of annoying and kind of fun at the same time.

For the past six months or so, I’ve noticed a couple of eyebrow hairs that turn a golden color. I’m a dark haired guy, so this is strange. I’ve plucked them in the past, but lately I’ve left them just to see what becomes of them. Today I looked in the mirror and it looked as though one eyebrow hair had fallen out and was clinging to the brow, so I went to remove it. When I touched the hair, I discovered that it was not a disconnected hair, but rather the tip of one of the golden colored bristles! This excited me. I stretched the hair out to see how long it had become, and to my surprise, it has grown to a length of about ¾ of an inch. The other golden hair next to it is about the same length, also brown-tipped.

Pretty wild stuff. I don’t have any plans for using the hairs to my advantage as of yet, but it is fun to see the hairy changes that come with age.

Dollies + People

0

DollyWhile at work today, I attempted to give my friend McKay a ride on a dolly (aka hand truck). It seems to me that doing this almost always results in the same two factors.

1. The lifter doesn’t prepare for the weight and limberness of the person because they are used to lifting larger things that, although are heavy, are rigid. People, being mostly water, are much heavier than appliances or furniture (I work at a furniture store.)

2. The liftee doesn’t realize just how much tilt will be involved and will generally react in a knee-jerk-like reaction when their brain tells them they are going to fall.

These two factors usually cause two more things to happen:

1. The liftee reacts to the falling motion by either sitting up (if back is to the dolly) or pushing themselves back (if facing the dolly). Either one of these reactions will push down with great force on the dolly.

2. The lifter will feel the much heavier weight than anticipated, and while re-bracing for the heavier load, gets his with even more weight by the liftee’s reaction to the falling motion.

With these two obligitory effects of not thinking things through, one of the two people almost always gets a little bruise and they both have a good laugh. Today’s case was with McKay facing the dolly, he pushed off, I jerked up on the handle. Apparently he won, because I punched my leg real hard right on a pen that was in my pocket. My hand was sore at first, now my leg is bruised.

I’ve done it many times before and I’m sure I’ll do it again. Just one of those things that I think most people do and never think too much about. I like to analyze small meaningless things like that.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You

Thank you to Spamusement.com for expressing how I feel about one of the most hideous shows on television. I find it hideous above other horrid shows mostly because of its widespread popularity that has made it nearly impossible for anyone living in America to avoid regardless of how hard they try.

Herein lies the magic.

Finally! iPod Video

It’s been years that I’ve waited for Apple to do this. From the preview videos, it looks like they’ve really done it right. I’d better upgrade from my 2nd gen iPod.

The New iPod with Video.

Mental Toughness

0

After watching UFC 55 recently, the mental toughness of the fighters became very apparent to me. Some of the fighters scheduled for UFC 56 were interviewed, but it was different than other fighting sports I’ve seen. Two pairs of fighters were interviewed. Each pair that was matched up with each other were sitting side by side and discussing strategy witn the interviewer. Now, in boxing, I’ve seen competitors be friendly towards each other, but they always shy away from strategy. This was different, they were asked how they planned on beating the opponent (who was right next to them) and they would go on to explain weaknesses they saw in the other’s game.

I’m becoming more and more of a fan of the UFC. It has less feaux hype than almost any sport I’ve seen. When fighters say what they plan on doing right in front of their opponent, then go into the ring and somehow manage to still win the fight, that’s pretty impressive to me. Another thing I’m impressed by is the genuine mutual respect most fighters have for each other. It seems as though the fighters truly just love to fight, that they are in it for the love of the game. After most fights, each fighter will show their genuine respect to the other fighter and make sure they’re alright.

I’m liking this stuff more and more each time I watch it.

Blogging and Drupal

0

For the past few months, I’ve been keeping up on Darren Rowse’s blog, Problogger.net. Anyone who reads Slashdot has probably heard him mentioned a couple times. He makes ridiculous amounts of money from blogging. He has around 20 blogs and updates most of them at least daily. I’ve found it interesting to see just what it takes to make it to that level of blogging, as this is my first venture into the blogging world.

At the moment I’m playing with a few different ideas on how to approach making a little money through blogging myself. I think it would be a reasonable goal to get a few blogs going by the end of the year. I like how Darren has set his up. He has a couple root sites that hold all of his blogs one level deep. That seems to help any new blog get quick credibility.

This site uses Drupal as the content management system. I’m growing to like Drupal quite a bit. I just played around with it a bit tonight, and I think it will work nicely with a multi-blog setup like how Darren has with using WordPress.

I’m not sure how I’ll be at staying motivated, but the rewards if I do it correctly have potential to be great. There are a lot of great affiliate programs out there and I could always use some extra cash. I have no intentions of getting to where Darren is (from his revealed income, so far it appears as though he’s close to making over $300k per year from blogging), but I see it possible to have a side income at least equal to having a minimum wage job.

I probably won’t use BillyStyle as the home of any of these blogs, this site will remain the more personal blog where I don’t use any search engine optimization to gain ranks. I’m playing with Gallery and should have a decent looking photo gallery on here soon as well.

These, of course, are all plans and goals right now. It will take some motivation and consistency to make these ideas come into fruition. Hopefully by year’s end I’ll have at least 2 blogs up and running that I update daily. BillyStyle should also look better by then as well.

Update: I switched the site to WordPress 2.0 in January 2006. Short explanation here.
