This week I bought a new mattress/box spring set. I realized that this is the first time I’ve ever had a brand new mattress set. I’m 27 years old, pretty interesting I thought. I have spent most of my life on a twin sized mattress. The most recent was a twin from Deseret Industries thrift store that I got used from a roommate about four years back. It was getting pretty bad, if I sat on the mattress, the springs bottomed out.
I had a plan to get a king sized mattress soon, but a sweet deal came up. I work at a large furniture store. Recently, the mattress buyer for the store got a slew of mattresses from a new company to see if the store would begin carrying the brand. He decided not to carry the brand and sell the new unused mattresses to employees at a very good price, although still making $100 – $200 profit per mattress…naturally. I put my name on the list to get one of these, and last night I slept on it for the first time.
Now, this being the first time on a new mattress that I bought, I actually didn’t sleep too well. I feel great this morning, so I think the mattress is great, so here’s my theory. I think I didn’t sleep well because subconsciously, I was paying too much attention to how comfortable the mattress was, and didn’t let myself fall deeply asleep. Pretty interesting. I imagine over the next week or so, the novelty will wear thin and then I’ll get back into the normal swing of things.
Just watch this video of an autistic high school basketball team manager. It’s quite possibly the most awesome thing to ever happen in high school basketball.
Update: Link fixed.

Another Update:
Now ESPN has put an even more touching video together of the whole ordeal. Here’s the link:

I’m about to head to Provo for a day or so, but this random memory hit me. Just over a year ago, somebody at work found this awesome album. Be sure to check out the song previews on the left of the page. My favorites are Magna Dance and Sariah (Vocal).

I work in a
furniture store. Naturally, I hear people discussing dimensions of furniture on a regular basis. I am but a lowly display grunt worker, so I don’t get involved in these conversations, I just sit back with a smug look on my face. The error I’ve noticed most is that many people say “heighth” as opposed to the actual word, which is height (no, it doesn’t end in a “th” like it’s neighbor, width).
Two types of people say it, customers and salespeople. I realize most customers are idiots and therefore I hold no expectations from them. The salespeople, however, are generally pretty confident in their furniture knowledge. A pillar of furniture knowledge is basic facts about furniture, such as dimensions. When discussing dimensions, one is likely to say width and height. Most of the time here in good old St. George, Utah, though, it is heard as “heighth” as opposed to height. Good times.

The participants in the 2006 All-Star Weekend Dunk Contest have been set. I’m rather excited for one of the guys in the contest: Nate Robinson. I believe he will be the shortest guy in the contest since 5’7″ Spud Webb won in 1986; 20 years ago. Nate is 5’9″ and looks like he’s on a trampoline when he jumps up for rebounds in games. The kid can sky. He’s a strong little guy too, 180 lbs at that height. I am 6’3″ and weigh 185 lbs. That means his dunks will probably not be gentle.
The other guys in the field are the reigning champ, Josh Smith, then Hakim Warrick, and Andre Iguodala.

Tiger Woods just bought a 10 acre piece of land on Jupiter Island, Florida for a cool $38 million. His house is a decent size at 13,207 square feet. The property also has several guest houses.
Sportscenter did a short piece on this property with some cool facts. Tiger bought the property with money he earned and has been setting aside solely from tournament prizes. Over his career, he has won over $55 million in prize money. Another thing they did was break down what his loan would be like if he lived like the rest of us. On a 30 year mortgage with a 5.75% interest rate, here are the details:
|
Cost of Home:
|
$38M |
|
Down Payment (20%):
|
$7.6M |
|
Total Mortgage:
|
$30.4M |
|
Monthly Payment:
|
$177,400 |
Also noted was that the average American home is priced at $190,000 – slightly above what his monthly payment would be.

When I updated the site to WordPress, I did something at which search engine optimizers would cringe. I totally changed the structure of the site, moved all the existing articles to new locations, and didn’t do any rerouting to take care of 404 errors. Why did I do it? Mostly because I’m experimenting with this site to see what happens.
I’m using Google Sitemaps, as I have been for the past five months or so. It seems to really help to get posts up high in Google’s results with haste. It’s funny what pages have been popular in Google searches. The Chuck Norris post got the most, the Booty Slapping incident has caught the attentions of searchers, and surprisingly, when one searched Google for “Hyperextended Big Toe,” this post was in the top three results. It currently still comes up in that spot, but to a dead link. Seeing as how I don’t really care much on this site about fixing little things like that (I averaged 10-20 visitors per day), I will wait and see if my new sitemap file will get updated in Google.
